The National Stadium in Singapore opened in June 2014, replacing the old Kallang Stadium on the same site. The brand new all-purpose sports arena is where you can watch the Singapore National Football team play their home matches, as well as exhibition cricket, rugby, athletic and live music events.
The stadium is by far the biggest in Singapore, holding up to 55,000 people – although the customizable seating can be reduced for smaller events. The spectacular dome-shaped stadium is visible from all over Singapore, with its retractable roof and red/white seating making it stand out as one of Singapore’s most famous landmarks.

Singapore National Stadium is located on the same site as the old ‘national stadium’ which was knocked down in 2007. The new arena is also part of a wider sports complex known as the Singapore Sports Hub, which includes an aquatic centre, small indoor arena, sports museum, library and shopping mall. There are also several restaurants dotted around the venue as well as the surround Kallang neighbourhood – great for some pre or post-match fills.
The cutting-edge stadium design holds the record for being ‘the largest dome structure in the world’, with the retractable roof able to full open/close in 25-minutes when it rains while also creating a cooler indoor temperature during daytime events (and providing shade from the sun). The curved roof can also double up as a giant projector screen at night for special events in Singapore, such as New Year celebrations and Singapore’s National Day events each year.
Notable events which have been staged at Singapore National Stadium include several FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches, the 50th National Day Parade, 2014 World Rugby Club 10s, 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, 2015 Southeast Asian Games. Some famous musicians to take to the stage here include Mariah Carey in 2014 and boy band One Direction in 2015.
Singapore National Stadium is easy to reach as it actually has its own MRT Station (‘Stadium MRT’ on the Circle Line). Both Kallang MRT and Mountbatten MRT are walking distance while there is a taxi stand just outside too.
