No.5 Emerald Hill Bar

Famous Cocktail Bar in Orchard

If you’ve done with your shopping on Singapore’s famous Orchard Road and in the mood for some drinks, then make sure to check out the famous No.5 Emerald Hill cocktail bar. Named after its address (the fifth house on Emerald Hill), this swanky spot has been at the forefront of Singapore’s exciting and innovative cocktail scene since it first opened up in 1991.

And even if you’re not a fan of cocktails, the venue is still worth checking out for its friendly vibes and quirky interiors alone, comprised of a long bar illuminated by a skylight above, as well as second-floor pool table and a rather summery-feeling alfresco terrace.

Also known as just ‘No.5’, the bar is easily walkable from the gauntlet of shops at Orchard – even if you’re weighed down by handfuls of shopping. Just head up Cainhill Road and turn immediately right onto Emerald Link which connects with Emerald Hill. You’ll find that this cute little enclave is home to a dozen or so other bars and restaurants including Acid Bar, Ice Cold Beers Bar, Alley Bar and Stellar Bar, but we think No.5 stands out as the most inviting of the bunch.

The selection of cocktails at No 5 Emerald Hill is long, featuring a good variety of both the classics and signature mixes. Choosing one of these more inventive cocktails can be a bit of a lucky dip, with often mind-boggling combinations of liquor and other ingredients; however, the helpful mixologists are on hand to point you in the right direction depending on your taste.

Standouts include the ‘Peachy Surprise Martini’ (vodka, bols peach, peach syrup and lemon), ‘No.5 Cocktail’ (rum, vodka, pineapple juice, mango, coconut cream, strawberry puree, blue caracao and crème de banana) or try a shot of their ‘30-day Infused Chili Vodka’ for a spicy pick-me-up. Prices range from $20.

Elsewhere on the menu at No.5 Emerald Hills, there’s a good range of bottled and tap beers, wine, shooters and soft drinks. A modestly-sized bar snack menu is on hand to soak up the booze, with French fries, chicken wings and pizzas available throughout the day.

Don’t forget to check out one of Singapore’s longest-running happy hours either, stretching from noon (when they open) to 21:00 daily. If martinis are more your thing, arrive between 21:00-01:00 for even more tempting deals.
