Clarke Quay & Riverside Nightlife

What to Do and Where to Go at Night in Clarke Quay & Riverside

Nightlife in Clarke Quay is what this party hub of Singapore is really famous. Dazzling lights, beautiful people and buzzing nightclubs – these are some of the things that imprint themselves on your mind the first time you visit Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and a kaleidoscope of concept bars and pubs along the Singapore River. A mind-boggling selection of themes and attractions round out your choice of after-sunset indulgence.

Originally a centre of commerce along the Singapore River, Clarke Quay is nowadays a labyrinth of restaurants, concept bars, retail stores and recreation outlets. Try Bar Cocoon or Bamboo Bar at The Forbidden City, Lunar Asian Fusion Bar for great shows, or Bar Opiume at the Empress Place by the riverside and then Attica or Canvas for an after-hours rave.

Bar Cocoon @The Forbidden City

Bar CoCoon offers a cozy venue for lounging, socializing and clubbing with the unusual addition of massive opium beds enveloped by silk lanterns and drapery with lit incense, creating – you guessed it – a cocoon-like effect. Boasting the dubious distinction of being on the 'Best Bars to Break up In' list, Cocoon has a curious mixture of antiquity and modernity and part of the property is devoted to Singapore's first ice bar. With an extreme conditioned, temperature-controlled unit, the bar has a running temperature of -15 degrees Celsius, making it Singapore's largest and coldest ice bar.

Bar Opiume

This is Asia’s first ever prosecco and vodka bar. Bar Opiume at IndoChine Empress Place is frequented by the top flyers of Singaporean social life and has hosted an impressive list of world-class acts and corporate events such as the MTV Asia Post- Awards parties and most recently, the International Olympic Committee 2012 New York and London bids. One of the best outdoor chill-out lounges in town, the bar features soft comfortable sofas and an incomparable view out over the Singapore River. The bar has a resident jazz band that helps smooth out the wrinkles of many a punter after a hard day at the office.

Packed on the weekends with a young, trendy and sophisticated crowd, while on weekdays the atmosphere is more chilled-out. The bar has won numerous awards for both the design of the bar and the overall concept.

Beer Market

Beer Market in the heart of Clark Quay has adopted a pretty quirky concept which replicates the stock exchange: if a certain brand of beer is selling well at any given time, the higher the price will be. Beers that are less in demand will become cheaper, and all the fluctuating prices are displayed throughout on large plasma TVs. It’s a fun concept, and particularly good for the more frugal customers looking to grab themselves a bargain when the prices crash. The selection of larger and craft beers is solid, and there’s also a huge international food menu, perfect for lining your stomachs to avoid any crashes of a different kind.

Canvas Nightclub

Canvas Nightclub in Singapore opened its doors in July 2014, replacing the much-loved and fairly underground, Home Club, which closed down earlier in the year.  Since 2004, Home Club amassed a loyal following of alternative dance music lovers, who, in light of its closure and subsequent reboot, might be a little sceptical. China One

China One is what you would class as an all-in-one venue. In the early evening, it’s a great place to sink a few reasonably priced pints whilst playing a quiet game of pool. Arrive later (after 8pm) and you’ll find the place buzzing with office workers who flood in for their daily dose of alcohol-fuelled, post-work conversations. China One’s third stage usually happens on the weekend (or ladies’ night every Wednesday) when the office workers have gone home and the groups of party animals come out to play. Expect the crowd to migrate to the dance floor after midnight, with the house DJ playing a mix of electro, hip-hop, and chart remixes.

Located right in the heart of Clarke Quay, Clinic’s unique alfresco is easily identified by its hospital whites, colourful pills, syringes, drips, test-tubes and paraphernalia in all manner of the clinical, all in tribute to the tongue-in-cheek pop art of Damien Hirst. The mood is at once controversial and conspiratorial. If you’re in on the joke, the ironic pharma-kitsch décor will appeal to you. The diverse space allows a crowd with varied tastes to enjoy their own brand of entertainment.

Club DREAM (formerly Zirca)

After the closure of the ever popular Zirca in the heart of Clarke Quay, it was only a matter of time before another super-club popped up in its place. It eventually it did at the end of 2013 in the form of Club Dream, a 700 capacity venue that opens Weds, Fri and Sat. Although they boast the first ever ‘video music matching’ technology which map visuals to the drops of each track, what’s more impressive about Club Dream is their drink promos. Wednesdays are $S30 for guys and free for girls with everybody receiving a whopping five drinks tokens, eradicating the need for any pre-drinking beforehand. Fridays and Saturdays are $S28 for everybody with two drinks included (about what you’d paid for two drinks anyway in a regular bar).

Cuba Libre Cafe & Bar

Singaporeans and expats might be a little too quick to dismiss Cuba Libre as just another tourist bar at Clarke Quay, but when it comes to live music and feel-good vibes, this lively bar wins top marks in our book. Yes, you won’t find too many locals here, but that’s all but irrelevant with cosy venue jumping every night (apart from Sunday) with their excellent house bands who play Cuban hits and some particularly fun Latino infused covers of pop songs. The dancing starts at around 22:00 and don’t forget to try one of the signature Mojitos – highly recommended despite the $S24 price. Come between 18:00-21:00 and ask them about their promos for discount drink offers.

Marrakesh Moroccan Lounge & Bar

Marrakesh is truly an oasis in the heart of Clark Quay driven by the notion of a modernized Moroccan fantasy. Shuffle Bistro Bar

This spacious pub/restaurant is a good bet for groups or couples looking for a more chilled out venue with no shocks when the bill arrives at the end. Shuffle Bistro Bar boasts 150 seats, meaning the common Clarke Quay predicament of limited seating space at peak times is not so much of a problem here. They also serve up a tasty menu, mostly comprised of comfort food like chicken wings, pizzas and burgers - all coming in at a very reasonable S$10-15. At the back there’s a small stage welcoming local bands who play a mix of Chinese classics and chart covers – not exactly rocking the place like other Clark Quay joints, but certainly creating a more relaxed vibe that many people prefer.

The Chupitos Bar

Those with even the most basic grasp of Spanish will know what this bar is all about: shots, shots and more shots! Just don’t expect the miniature glasses of liquor to be served in any ordinary fashion. Many of the shooters come with their own themed trick or gimmick, often with fire or funny props involved in the process. Some shots are delightfully exotic (lychee martini), some are a bit disgusting (liquid steak), and others are just downright dangerous – gas chamber, absinth trilogy and torture bong, among others. It’s lots of fun and a great place to impress your friends, but probably not the best bar to spend an entire evening; with shots starting at S$12, both your wallet and your stomach won’t thank you in the morning.

The Crazy Elephant

The Crazy Elephant in Clark Quay throws class and sophistication right out the window, replacing it instead with a nightly dose of quality live rock music and a non-pretentious, casual atmosphere. Nestled alongside lines of swanky new ‘boutique’ and ‘bistro’ bars on the Clarke Quay riverfront, The Crazy Elephant stands out with its scruffy graffiti-lined walls and long-haired rockers nodding away to the blues and classic rock bands until the early hours. Drinks are reasonably priced too; at just over S$10 for a beer, this is one of the cheapest spots in the area. Arrive before the music starts (around 22:00) to grab a good spot, and don’t forget to bring your air guitar.
