Screening Room Singapore

Rooftop Bar, Cinema and Restaurant in one

Dinner and a movie take on a new meaning at Screening Room in Singapore, where the house chefs pair the menu with the film. The open-air rooftop is a beautiful spot for after-screening drinks offering great views over the Temple of the Tooth and Club Street.

Screening Room is easy to find, around a 10-minute walk from the MRT at Chinatown. This area is architecturally one of the most historically significant in the city and the Screening Room’s imposing terracotta facade fits beautifully amongst the shop-houses. Behind the white shutters there are four floors with a series of different entertainment venues, and an internal staircase with movie posters running alongside it.

On the first floor you will find the Mamouia Lounge and Restaurant with dishes designed to help you explore the taste of the Middle-East without leaving your table. The menu includes cuisine from Iran, Morocco, Turkey and Lebanon. The decor really fits the mood, with rich red and gold silks, intricate wall hangings and low ornately tiled coffee tables. Dishes here are made for sharing; hummus with freshly baked naan bread, lamb tagine accompanied by zesty couscous and char-grilled chicken served with a harissa sauce. Each cocktail on the list is named after a chapter of One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of tales including Aladdin, which make the perfect accompaniment to the food.

Head up to level three and you will find the movie theatre. For anyone who loves films this is a real treat – the best of home and cinema combined, with comfy sofas, a large screen and a private bar where you can order drinks or their house speciality, the herbed popcorn. One of the best things about Screening Room in Singapore is that they don’t only show latest releases, so it can be the perfect place to see a favourite classic movie on the big screen. They also host a range of events throughout the year, including the famous dinner and a movie, where dishes are chosen to match the theme, think feta salad and mezze whilst watching Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

On the roof you will find an open air terrace, perfect for a cocktail or two. This casual rooftop bar with wooden decking and Mediterranean vibe is not particularly high, but offers great views of Chinatown and Singapore’s business district. The bar area is quite small and can get busy, so if you are coming with a group it is probably best to book ahead or you will miss out on one of the cosy couches. On weekends DJs play some great tunes, and the lounge takes on a more party atmosphere.
