If you are looking for something a bit different in Clarke Quay then The Pump Room Microbrewery is worth checking out. Not only it is fantastically located with a view of the central square and fountains at Clarke Quay, it also serves great beers, food and hosts some fantastic live music and DJs. It’s very easy to find, take the MRT to Clarke Quay station and it’s only a five minute walk. Alternatively take one of Singapore’s many water taxis and arrive via the river. The Pump Room looks like a classic beer bar, with a sunny yellow facade and a variety of alfresco seating so you can people watch. There is also plenty of seating and a funky mirrored dance floor inside. If you are a real connoisseur, members of staff will be happy to show you the brewing room too.
The highlight of The Pump Room is undoubtedly their selection of house-brewed beers. Wanting to offer something outside the usual pints and halves that get served around the city, the beer creators at Pump Room decided to create their brewery on-site. Although that means that production is limited, it also gives the bar more control over flavours and aromas. If you want to try the different blends that Pump House makes, there is a beet sampler consisting of eight different tasters ranging from pale to dark and including such delights as Summer Ale, India Pale, Irish Stout and Porters. If any of them take your fancy you can also order a larger glass. If you’re not the beer drinking sort, there is also a decent selection of wine and cocktails.
Beer is also at the heart of their menu, and if you are a fan it is worth checking out the beer dishes. The subtle flavours of ale really complement the Scottish salmon, and the homemade golden ale infused dressing gives an extra kick to the blue cheese and pancetta potato salad. The main courses are more familiar: steak and ale pie, beer battered fish and prawns, pork knuckle with pale ale sauce, all easily large enough for two to share. The Pump Room even serves up beer with dessert; ale infused green apples, toasted with cinnamon and chocolate brownies with a hint of stout and triple chocolate ice-cream. For those who prefer to keep their beer in a glass there is a full menu of Australian and International cuisine, with signature steaks being a real crowd-pleaser.
The Pump Room at Clarke Quay also takes entertainment seriously with a live band playing current chart-topping hits as well as classic rock tunes on most evenings. They also have a host of DJs ready to spin your requests during band breaks and later in the evening, it’s not surprising that the dance floor gets busy at weekends. The Pump Room stands out at Clarke Quay because of the laid-back chilled out party vibe. It’s less pretentious than most, making it the perfect host for a night out with friends.
